Niuean Language Week

Fakalofa Lahi Atu
This week we have been celebrating Niuean Language Week. To celebrate this we weaved a mat where in Niue this is part of their life to create mats and hats from flax. Instead of using flax we used paper.
Over and under was the technique we went with to create our mat.
It was a struggle at first however that didn't stop us.
Lincoln, Jayden and Rawiri are busy weaving.
      Jessie and Cassius working hard.
            Presley using blue strips.
Trong, Crystal and Jorge all busy weaving their strips over and under.

Buddy reading

The Clever Kiwis and the Laughing Ilamas have been buddy reading. This week the Kiwis got to read their books they have been taking home this week to a buddy. The Kiwis had to remember what they had to do before, during and after they read the story.
Mary retelling the words in her words
Rawiri remembering to use his pointy fingers during reading.
Chante looking at the pictures with Ofa
Charlie asking Yzraell questions about the book.
Presley making the face of the Kind Bird in the story.
Lincoln and Compton both brothers talking about the pictures in the story and Lincoln remembering too low down while he is reading.
"This book is too easy" said Emma
Junior reading the book "bubbles" to his buddy "the bubble popped on the hedgehog" Junior concluded
Gardineeniah reading "Kitty Kitty" and using her personal experience talking about cat at home.
Mosilee really focused on sharing his  book with his buddy Tam
Jorge and Adrienne reading "I can Write"
Mary-Jane had the courage to read to her buddy. Very proud of you Mary -Jane, your buddy said that you read that story with ease.
The Clever Kiwis enjoyed reading with their buddies it enabled them to see what correct reading behaviours looks like, and also connect and build a relationship with the senior students of Rowandale.

Duffy Theatre

The Clever Kiwis thought that the Duffy theatre was funny and they had really funny costumes.
We were listening and focused on the play.
"They are funny" Yzraell giggling away during the play.
We got to meet Cleopatra through books that Duffy was reading. We learnt that that they write differently instead of using letters they draw pictures also known as hieroglyphics.
We met Sienna who doesn't like reading or writing at all and preferred watching movies on television and playing on her IPad. In the end she discovered that her favourite book Harry Potter was first made a book before it was movie. She began to enjoy writing because she got to write about her favourite books, and she discovered her own passion in the end and wanted to become a horticulturist.

They played our favourite book called "Maui and the Sun"

Kites

As part of our topic this term we have been exploring flight. As part of flight we have been designing our own kites.
We have been watching you tube clips about the different types of kites that we could make.
Materials we used to make our kites were string, paper, Popsicle sticks and Sellotape. Creating and thinking about how our kites were going to look like.
Mosilee and Mohammed working together to add support to their kite because they didn't want it to rip in the wind or "flop" when they flew it outside.
Emma was so excited "I can't wait to fly my kite"

Once we finished our kites (2 days later) we took them outside to test if they would fly.
Above: Mary flying her kite up in the sky

The children flying it from the top of the playground and seeing if they flew and by Yzraell's shouted "it floats"
We had a lot of fun making and designing our own kites.
What next? From our inquiry we are excited and decided that we will try other types of materials to make our kites.
